Barnabas Tharmr
You would allow this delusion of free will to bar your path to greatness? FINAL FANTASY XVI
|
Barnabas is a taciturn and stoic man, disfavoring conversation with most, and caring little for forming bonds with others. He is religiously devout and highly principled, favoring loyalty to an extreme degree. He does not trust people easily, or at all really, and he holds a great disdain for humanity as a whole. As such, he will manipulate others for his purposes, using them to further his ambition to save not only mankind, but the world itself. However, he is not open about these ideals of his, only choosing a select few to share with them his grand designs, which leads a lot of his actions to seem unfathomably cruel or purposeless to those otherwise ignorant.
He is dark and moody, and while he isn't entirely bereft of humor, his is most certainly wry and rather grim. Most the time he's dispassionate and apathetic, listless and bored with the world around him, yet he can be exceedingly stubborn in his long-held beliefs. He has no qualms about killing those who intend to stand in his way, making him exceedingly dangerous when he has a goalβwhich is always. Viewing death as a mercy more than a cruelty, he will sooner end someone's life than to prolong needless suffering. After all, he believes suffering is the end result of mankind's desiresβof their unabated free willβand if they cannot be brought to heel, then death is the next best alternative. As a deeply troubled man, he has walled off his heart from everyone in every capacity available to him. Favoring might over vulnerability, he is not one to leave himself open to the influences of others, and seeks to learn what he can to exploit the fatal chinks in their armor, while leaving his defenses impenetrable. He is measured in what he does, controlled, and purposeful, not one to give rise to what others might throw at him. He has nothing to prove to anyone. Not when he knows well his superiority and his might, as proven through his own merit, but likewise ordained by his God. Dominants are essentially demi-gods, they have superior human strength, resilience and healing, they hold power over their Eikon's specific element (Odin is darkness), and are able to transform and semi-transform as their Eikon. As such, being the Dominant of Odin means that Barnabas has mastery over darkness, and can summon forth Odin's black blade Zantetsuken as well as his spear Gungnir. Dominants are also capable of blessing others with their power, allowing them a taste of their element's power. Despite having a large mass of aether (magical power) others do not seem to be able to sense him, unlike the other Dominants who can feel each others aether even at long distances. His presence seems otherwise shrouded from people, even his own creation cannot sense him in this way. He also can manifest his voice wherever he wants and be heard (and also hear) seemingly regardless of distance, even when he teleports away his voice becomes disembodied but decidedly capable of being heard despite his absence. Dominants are capable of creating Egiβmagical beings which serve their will. Typically these are notably a magical blend of a creature and humanoid (think a harpy or a mermaid, but more magical looking and less specifically organic, and certainly not sapient), but Barnabas is special and his Egi is a Real Boy. That is to say, he's capable of creating an Egi that is essentially a living person who has his own experiences and to some degree his own will. His thoughts and emotions are influenced by Barnabas' own, but he otherwise is arguably enough of his own existence, even if he is inextricably bound to Barnabas. He also has access to most of Barnabas' powers, his skills with weaponry are on par with Barnabas, and he also turns into Barnabas' steed when Barnabas primes into Odin. His Egi can also make endless copies of himself, though they seem to get weaker the more there are of him, they can still overwhelm in their number. Even if killed, his Egi will just respawn, he can only die if Barnabas dies. *Note: Sleipnir is an appable character, and so Barnabas will not have access to this power in game. Still, it is worth noting what he is capable of! A sword made of darkness with the ability to cut through literally anything, but more than that it also can cause instant death. It erases matter from existence, severing the impossible, and it is implied to even be able to cut through things without tangible form (like people's emotional bonds, though this is the one thing Barnabas doesn't know how to do, thankfully). He can summon multiple of them as well, and his precision with it is so exacting that he was able sever a man's nigh every sinew without making a single lethal blow. As he attacks with Zantetsuken, he can send out arcs of dark energy which then he can manipulate further what they cut and how, to what degree, even. Cutting even at someone internally (like he did with the sinew) without damaging the outside. A spear made of darkness, often used to cause explosions or fire off beams of destruction which do more damage than outright erasing anything like Zantetsuken does. However, he can create barriers that he channels through multiple Gungnirs which effectively acts as a bug zapper, but instead of electricity, whatever touches it disintegrates instantly. Dominants can Prime, which means that they manifest as their Eikons at their zenith, all of their powers amplified while in this form. For Barnabas, this means he turns into an armored giant, typically upon the back of his spectral steed Sleipnir. In this form he is roughly 50ft tall, is seemingly impervious, and wields existential destruction with utter ease. He is capable of everything that is listed in his powers otherwise, just to an extreme degree. He has advanced regeneration, capable of even reforming lost body parts if someone is capable of actually harming him, any damage suffered while in this form does not generally impact his actual body (think about wild shape from D&D if you're familiar). Like Priming, Dominants can Semi-Prime, which means they only partially manifest as their Eikon, taking on features that are similar to their Eikon, while otherwise maintaining their more human-like qualities. In Barnabas' case, he actually grows to 9ft tall, his skin turns jet-black, and he enjoys a boost to all of his powers in this form, though not as much as he does from his full Priming. Barnabas commands absolute authority over dark magic, which is primarily the power of destruction in his canon. This magic manifests as dark-fire, dark-lightning, it can be used to form beams of destructive energy that destroys what it touches, and so forth. Darkness seems to preside over time and space, allowing Barnabas to levitate himself, or suspend other things in space until he chooses to release it. He can also slow down time, and even stop it. Think of it this way: if Light is the Sun/stars, then Darkness is a black hole. Which is why it is fitting he has a hammerspace where he keeps items, mostly weapons and armor, but there does not seem to be a limit to what he could potentially put inside of it. Being Akashic means that Barnabas is supercharged with aether (raw magical power) and that has had a large impact on him in many ways. The Akashic typically gain super strength and resilience, their magical abilities (if they have them) are heightened, they also become biologically immortal, but at a cost of their own personhood/free will which typically results in them being aggressive/locked into whatever emotion they were feeling when the change happened. That's the norm for typical people, but with Barnabas being a Dominant, he is capable of retaining some level of his own mind, though his will has greatly been compromised and his ability to feel emotions like joy and the like has been near completely robbed of him. However, unlike other Dominants, him using his powers does not afflict him with the curse that slowly turns them into stone due to his akashic state. He also has advanced regeneration, even more so than the other Dominants, and this makes him nearly unkillable. CANON POINT: The Last King
