[Barnabas says nothing at the correction. He really isn't invested in the gender of his behemoth at the moment, and he doubts the behemoth cares either. Even if Vincent does.]
While I was ill, I was given an egg to look after and a wretched snake was born from it. Seems to love being in my shoes and biting me. Thankfully, it doesn't seem to be poisonous but it also doesn't seem to be capable of dying so... here's to hoping that it gets to experience what it's like to shuffle off this mortal coil and burn forever in Hell.
[By Barnabas' measure it seems Vincent was given an annoying problem that reflects how vexing he is on others. A fitting punishment, perhaps. Karmic justice, even.
He makes no comment on it, and it almost seems like he's going to hang up now that he's gotten the explanation and given Vincent the answer about the behemoth.]
We both know you do not care for the answer. Why ask it?
... My world soon faces its inevitable end. Should Aurora's words prove true, then she will either pose as a possible solution or merely a hurdle ere I might resume my role.
It is simply fate. We all have our burdens, and those who are not equal to their task deserve to be crushed under a purpose too grand for them.
[Barnabas' voice is measured and otherwise matter-of-fact. There isn't pride in it, but rather an aloofness that might accompany a statement of the obvious.]

Her. I've grown attached to "her."
[ Anyway. ]
I do hope that snake ends up dying from whatever she's doing.

... Snake?

Now come on, ask me how I am.
no subject
[He almost leaves it at that, but then:]
Barring the snake, you seem well.

[ Pfft. ]
I was quite ill for a bit. Heathcliff had to suffer along with me since I wasn't in the mood to make anything for her. [ Whine - whine - whine.
And with great amount of sincerity: ] Has anything been troubling you, my king?
no subject
You are not the only one who feeds the behemoth.
[Stop personifying the monster!!]
I am not one easily troubled.
[But that doesn't mean he isn't.]
no subject
[ Hmmm. ]
But that doesn't mean you aren't, right?
I'm more than happy to listen to your grievances.

[Well, there's Cidolfus, but he would rather die than talk about him.]
You do not seem the type to indulge another of his burdens.
[So why are you attempting now?]
no subject
It means you can complain without any repercussions.
[ Damn, he right. But Barnabas did him one small good so he has to repay it. :) ]

We should at least hear the other's troubles once and awhile.
no subject
The troubles I face are those that might find correction here, should this prove not the fiction it may yet be.
[Saving the world, yadda yadda.]

Fascinating. That's quite a lot to put on your shoulders already even if you are royalty.

[The Lord has made it so, he doesn't say. Such details are not for a man like him to know.]

But some affirmations from a lowly person like me are good for the soul.

But really, everyone needs a pick-me-up once in a while.

[Barnabas can act all tough, but even he requires an indulgence of sort here and there. Though "here" does not have what he truly yearns for...]

[There's a pause, then he continues:]
Have you found your lodgings serving you well? Illness and snake aside.
