[Oh... Sleipnir knows this tone. He doesn't glance at His Majesty— it would serve no purpose, there is no facial expression to glean upon a suit of armor.]
Someone from this world— a man motivated by the usual avarice which infects mankind. He just so happened to also have a taste for beautiful young men. I tried to get more details from him, but I suppose if he ratted out his sources he would not be so accredited.
If you would prefer I can send you his information through our ear pieces, but I do not think he has anything more to give us. I was weighing the merits of killing him just so others do not get their hands on this information...
[Sleipnir believed the person who caught and solved the anomaly issue would be granted a far better boon in means of achieving their world's safety.]
[Barnabas is quiet for a long moment, as if contemplating over the information, or perhaps he is...distracted. It is difficult to know, really, though Sleipnir might be able to surmise that it is more the latter than the former. But then, he speaks, almost sudden in its breaking of the silence he has allowed to hang between them.]
Send me his details. While I may not pursue him directly, he proved useful in discovering information all the same. He may prove of use in future missions, if his competence is not merely a fluke.
[Aether swirls around him a moment, whisking away his helmet in a whip of dark mist, and he turns to look to Sleipnir proper, his face exposed.]
Worry you others might use this information for ill?
[Sleipnir takes in the measure of silence doled out in the air. He isn't necessarily fond of the connection Barnabas has made with the anomaly and the almighty... He couldn't be here, could He? Well, he is God, so Sleipnir supposes he must be able to be here if they the rest of them are...
His Majesty's voice breaks him out of this reverie.]
It will be done.
[He nods, seeing the wisdom in keeping a contact alive if they are indeed to come back here. Sleipnir had been under the impression these places were one-and-done, but if Barnabas believes it so then it must be true.
Once the aether begins to mount Sleipnir turns to face Barnabas as well, enjoying as ever the sight of him.]
That is indeed something which concerns me— we do not want it to fall into someone's hands which will do a better job at concealing it... There is also the matter of willing favor for our world in particular.
[Surely they are not meant to work together, if they were, why is there so many of them? Merit could not be given out evenly if several of their number did nothing while the few labored to get the mission done.]
[The truth of the matter is that Barnabas does not know if they will return to this world, but he cannot be certain that they never will. So, as such, he would rather arm himself with information than be left without it. Better to be thorough.
As he gazes at Sleipnir, listening to him as he speaks his concerns, he does not give any sign that he sways either which way on the topic. Still, he has his full attention, that intensely pointed gaze locked upon him like the edge of a blade, yet for Sleipnir such a blade is ever blunted with his care.]
You believe that we are in competition, then.
[He does not say what he believes, the comment is neutral, almost a question as much as a statement. Wishing to understand Sleipnir's perspective, what he has gathered from his comparatively shorter time here, and what he interprets of their situation as. Naturally Barnabas has his own thoughts, but to hear his Lord Commander's thoughts is always refreshing.]
[Sleipnir enjoys how Barnabas withholds his opinions until Sleipnir has stated his own. It makes his thoughts more organic to him, unswayed and original. That Barnabas would hear Sleipnir unfettered by others' thoughts is highly complimentary and it is appreciation he will never grow weary of.]
If we are to believe Echo is true in giving us this ordeal I cannot but think our worlds are in competition; him choosing which to save implies a great number which will not. We have already passed some prior assessment, to have been chosen to champion our world, but now we face these challenges as tests to our merit. While we may not know what metrics are being used for judgement it would be unwise to think if one of us succeeds everyone in Etraya so too does.
There must be some sort of rating or ranking system; I refuse to believe a person whom shirks their duty is rewarded same as those who put their noses to the grindstone.
[And so it follows: if people receive different amounts of merit for the task then there is a ranked order. And if Echo needs to choose which to save Sleipnir refuses to have Valisthea be anywhere but the top.]
[As Sleipnir speaks, Barnabas watches him with undivided focus. He, too, has considered such, and even now he is not entirely certain if they are fully in competition or meant to work together. Some missions would have them work as a team, others as rivals, yet they are expected to live together throughout these trials and so it raises the question of whether or not the bubble as a whole is being judged, or if each world individually is.]
Would it not stand to reason that our failure to assist those incapable of saving themselves should be a mark against our own worthiness?
[After all, was it not they who labored to save mankind who refused to take the step needed for salvation? Was it not their strength of conviction and faith that would save mankind from themselves?]
There are others, much the same as Etraya. We may be in competition with them, though I am uncertain if we are in direct competition with those within Etraya. Our efforts may secure our position within, but perhaps Etraya itself must succeed as a whole.
[By his view, it is not unlike the Almighty's plan.
Valisthea, the Mothercrystals, the Dominants; all had their parts to play. Some refused, others unwittingly complied, but it was the loyal and faithful that directed it towards its fate and fruition. Mankind will be saved by Barnabas making them serve, this he believes wholly, and perhaps Etraya is much the same...even if there are individual failures among the many, if the success of the strong despite the weak is what matters, then so be it.]
[Oh, Sleipnir hasn't been aware of there being other places like Etraya and so he shifts his weight and considers this new information, holding it up and seeing where it does and doesn't fit within his own theories. There were just so many holes in their knowledge, so many blind spots...]
This being, Echo. He is not all knowing—if he was we would not have to prove ourselves on behalf of our worlds, he would know already which is most deserving. If he knows not this then there are many things he does not know and as such I cannot say how effective having multiple groups of world-champions competing against each other would be.
Having learned of some force destroying universes Echo made the decision to save some rather than only their own. When choosing this he decided to not leave it to blind luck, although it would be of much more considerable ease to do so. If he chose to save quantity over quality he would not have to go through all which is needed to run these trials. Everything has a cost and one of the prices for these challenges must be time—even if it is not as we may know it. While he could have simply picked ones at random, he chose not to do so. If this is correct, if his intent is pick which universes are worthy of salvation— I do not think he would let one universe fail merely because the majority in the trial has done so.
[He sighs and shakes his head.]
I do not like working based on speculation, but we must. To me, the safest would be to assume both are true and we must compete not only as individuals, but also as a group. It would serve us well to aid these others with us, yet ensure they do not do as well as we so perform.
Yet all within Etraya share but the same goal: salvation.
[A unifying force, yet one that many will still ignore for their myopic view of the world. That he should be tasked with something so similar yet again is unsurprising, but it is...burdensome in its own way.]
As you, I care little having naught beyond speculation, however unity and cooperation has oft proven favorable. Should a mission require competition, scarce is such done individually. Nor such groups determined by your origin. To bring detriment or impediment to our fellow Etrayans is to bring detriment to ourselves—of this I am assured.
[There is very little which impresses upon him that Echo or Aurora has aimed for them to sabotage each other. Quite the opposite, really. Given that such is only asked for during specific instances, but harmony is otherwise seemingly encouraged. And while one might find that suspect in and of itself, it could simply be just as legitimate.
[Like all questions Barnabas poses of him Sleipnir too gives this one thought before speaking.]
...Not by and of itself. I merely find it prudent to prepare for a challenge even if one inevitably does not arise. I would much rather have done so and found it not needed than having needed to and found myself having squandered the time to so prepare.
[Sleipnir shifts his weight back.]
If your experience says it is true I shall too believe. Would you find it preferable for me to reach out to lend aid to others more readily?
